Goa Carnival Mask

The Goa Carnival constitutes is the most elaborate festival of the formerly Portuguese state of Goa. Like other Carnival Festivals around the world it is held every year in the days before Lent during the month of February and, in Goa, it lasts for three days. During this time, the City erupts with festivities and people feast, drink and make merry. Though historically a Christian festival, now people from all of the religions in multi-ethnic Goa celebrate with similar enthusiasm. The Carnival of Goa starts with a display of colourful floats. The Goa Carnival is also characterized by its parades with masks and masked balls. The masks that have evolved are important objects in these festivities, allowing for a sportive reflection Goa's multi-ethnic identity.
